about us
We take pride in our family history that consists of a lineage of beekeepers spanning three generations which inspired us to start our own apiary.
As a child I was captivated by the sight of my grandfather tending to his bees, which sparked a deep fascination within me. Now, as I embark on this journey, I am filled with excitement for the opportunity to pass down this knowledge to my own grandchildren.
The name "Mad Dog Honey" was derived from a childhood memory of witnessing a dog playfully chasing after honey bees and getting stung on the nose . This playful and slightly mischievous image stuck with me and when I decided to start an apiary, I knew it was the perfect name to capture the essence of our endeavor!
OUR BEES
We take pride in robust honey bee colonies. With the alarming decline in the honey bee population, we play a crucial role in ensuring their survival. During the springtime, we trap wild swarms of honeybees which helps to save colonies. Without us intervening, wild honeybee survival rate is sadly 1/6. We bring these colonies to our apiary and provide them with a new healthy home.
Our apiary boasts some of the highest quality queen bees in the world which are sourced from Hawaii. We also have Russian hybrids, known for their aggression but also their exceptional honey production.
what makes our honey special
Our apiary is located in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, where we have access to vast quantities of sourwood and tulip poplar trees. Sourwood honey is highly sought after and considered one of the best in the world. We are committed to using only 100 percent organic products to treat our clover fields and apple orchards. By protecting the honeybee, we are safeguarding our own survival as well.
At our apiary, we have the privilege of cultivating various types of honey, including sourwood, tulip poplar, clover, and wildflower.
This year we decided to experiment by trying a new process of mixing sourwood and wildflower together during the spinning of the honey. The results were truly astonishing! We conducted a taste test with our friends and family, and the word of mouth spread like wildfire. We were completely sold out before we could even bottle it. We named this extraordinary creation "Mountain Floral" as it captures the essence of its unique blend.
